My soaping journey began, like so many others, with a simple step. I quit shaving… for a year!
In 2014, my beautiful wife told me she was pregnant with our first child, I decided to grow a beard through the pregnancy. As our child, and my beard, grew, I began the search that many fathers have to seek out the healthiest way to raise our child and live my own life. I noticed that when I read the ingredient labels for soaps, body washes, shaving creams, shampoos, and conditioners that I had no idea what most of them were. A small amount of research revealed that not only were the shampoo bottles made from petrochemicals but the contents, as well. It didn’t ease my mind when I could easily connect Styrofoam and antifreeze to the soaps and moisturizers I was using.
Our skin is our largest organ and it is very absorbent. Add to the mix that when I shower, I am in an enclosed space, atomizing these products by rubbing them into a lather, and likely inhaling a fair amount of it, as I washed my growing beard and mustache. Ethanolamine, phenoxyethanol, diethanolamine, parabens, benzene, and ethylene oxide were just a few of the chemicals I was not comfortable exposing myself to, nor did I have a desire to expose my precious new daughter to either.
This led me to find the "old timey" lye soap that my great grandmother had made on her farm in west Texas. I started by trying a variety of brands from what I could find in boutique shops and online retailers. Unfortunately, most were too fruity, floral, or sweet smelling. Most were too expensive for my growing family’s budget. Most did not use sustainably sourced ingredients. (Palm oils are a great example of a product that continues to be a major driver of deforestation of some of the world's most biodiverse forests, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino.)
Because of this, I started making my own and I fell in love with the process. I tried recipe after recipe, researched the benefits of essential oils, learned as much as I could about the chemistry involved in soap making, tested additives and enrichers, and I tried to make it as beautiful as I could. I tweaked and tested until I had a recipe I was happy with and then I made soap for my family’s personal use. And I made lots of it. I made more than we could use.
It is now my pleasure to be able to offer the same soap that my family has used for almost ten years. It is a skin nourishing, moisturizing, and cleansing soap. More than that, it is an experience. The colors, fragrances, and textures of our premium shower bars truly elevate the bathing experience. I hope you will give them a try and discover just how much better your bathing experience can be. You deserve it.
Thank you and God bless.
